Air Travel Legislation

The Federal Aviation Administration, FAA, has announced new legislation in hopes of improving air travel. The FAA and congress have settled on a compromise that satisfies both airline companies and passengers.

Provisions included in the reauthorization bill will demand that passengers under 13 will be booked in seats next to family members for no additional cost, baggage fees for luggage lost longer than 12 hours will be promptly refunded, and requires the TSA to deploy measures to shorten screening times and security lines.

‘‘This is an amazing win for consumers,’’ said Charles Leocha, president of Travelers United, “It is far more than consumers would have gotten with a straight extension.’’

Luxury Hotel Brings Rebirth to Asbury Park

Two blocks from the boardwalk, the Asbury Hotel opening is a milestone as the first hotel opening in Asbury Park, NJ in over 50 years. A derelict Salvation Army building was converted into the boutique hotel, tuned to showcase the city’s music, art, and food scenes.

Asbury Park has seen some struggles with hurricanes, the Great Recession, and Superstorm Sandy, but the Victorian charm and proximity to Manhattan have helped the city recover.

The Asbury hotel has a communal outdoor meeting lounge, The Pit, and Soundbooth, a music-themed bar just inside the lobby, for entertaining guests within the building. A beer garden, outdoor pool, and contracted food trucks round out the experience well.

Here is an example of just how much less a private flight can cost compared to commercial. A recent private charter flight for six people from a private airport in the New York City area to Nassau, Bahamas was listed at $1,074. That equals roughly $179 a person. In comparison, flights from New York City (NYC) to Nassau are currently listed as $260 on United Airlines. Here are some of the typical extra fees with United Airlines:

  • Checked Bag Fee is $25
  • In-Cabin Pet Fee is $125-$250
  • Reservation by Phone Fee: $25

As you can see, for this particular flight, it would be cheaper for a family or party of six to fly by way of a charter or private jet. In addition to the cost savings, private jet passengers often have access to upscale amenities, such as spa rooms, private lounges and free parking. These benefits make flying via private jet a win-win situation.
