Rick Steves explains that both public telephones and many options on the computer will keep you in touch with your loved ones and give you the chance to share your trip with others.

Hotel phones and public pay phones are good for local calls and even toll-free calls. Hotel phones are also fine for long-distance and international as long as you are aware of rates. Internet cafes and public computers are also fine options for keeping in touch. There are many wifi-enabled places that offer computers for use, where you can do what you need to do to commmunicate. Some may even offer webcams for Skype and similar programs.
