Overcoming Jet Lag

If you are traveling to a foreign country, if you will be hopping from plane to plane or if you simply have trouble sleeping, jet lag can become your number one enemy. While it might not be easy for everyone to overcome jet lag, there are several things you can do to ensure you arrive at your final destination feeling rested and refreshed.

Take Melatonin

Melatonin is a hormone that regulates your sleep-wake cycle. When it gets dark, your melatonin levels rise and reach their peak overnight before lowering in the morning hours. To help with jet lag, buy melatonin supplements and take one the night you travel and for a couple of days afterwards when you reach your destination. If you will be flying into the sun, take melatonin in the evening. It is best that you talk with your doctor about taking melatonin to ensure you do not take too much and to ensure it does not interact with any medication you are currently taking.

Lavender Oil

Lavender oil is a mild sedative that not only helps you sleep, but also helps you to feel rested and refreshed when you wake up. To use the oil correctly, take a bottle with you and add a few drops of your pillow and let the serene aroma lull you to sleep.

Pycnogenol

Pycnogenol is extracted from French pine trees and has been proven to help with jet lag. It is best that you take 50 milligrams of pycnogenol starting two days before you fly out and continue taking it three times a day for a week. Doing so can go a long way in reducing mental slowness, fatigue, insomnia and other symptoms associated with jet lag. Even if you do find you suffer from symptoms of jet lag after taking pycnogenol, you more than likely will not experience them for as long as you would had you not taken pycnogenol.

Do not let jet lag keep you from enjoying yourself or getting work done while you are traveling. Talk with your doctor about your best options for overcoming jet lag.

Beating Jet Lag With Science

No traveler ever looks forward to experiencing jet lag as a result of a long period of travel. It can be incredibly challenging to adjust to a new time zone and flights can leave you exhausted or wide awake. However, with science determining what exactly causes jet lag, we now have the tools to prevent it from happening – or at least mitigating the outcome.

Before you leave, start waking up an hour earlier each day if you are traveling east. If you are traveling west, do the reverse, if possible. When you are on the plane, reset your watch to the local time of your destination. Control the sunlight on the plane by pulling the shade, wearing a face mask, or sitting on the shadow side of the plane. Try to sleep on a normal schedule, stay hydrated, and keep yourself busy when you should be awake.

Upon arrival, try to get as much sunlight as possible when you are trying to stay awake; if you are trying to sleep, avoid it. Do your best to fight any symptoms by adjusting to the new schedule as best you can.
