After flying to the island of Baltra and sailing to a nearby cove for some snorkeling, Kenneth Miller was finally visiting the place of Charles Darwin’s seminal studies on evolution.

I started swimming away from the boat, and right under me I saw a giant sea turtle swimming 3 or 4 feet below the surface. When I put my face back in the water, there was a little flock of Galápagos penguins, about five of them, zipping right past me.

That wasn’t even half of the sea life he encountered in just the first 20 minutes of his Galapagos experience. There were cormorants, sea lions, and other various marine crustaceans.
